Changing Character
Formerly an industrial heartland, urban renewal has transformed the Inner South. Suburbs including Alexandria, Zetland and Waterloo used to be dominated by industrial buildings, but as residential development within the region has boomed, the character of these inner city locales has adapted accordingly.
As the 1990s drew to a close, young professionals working in the city began moving into the area. With them came a vibrant mix of cafés, art galleries, antique stores and other cultural attractions. This gave rise to key residential precincts including Landcom’s ‘natural neighbourhood’ of Victoria Park at Zetland and the old brewery site near Moore Park.
The changing demographic also brings new demands for living, retail and commercial environments that meet this group’s needs. Green Square Town Centre is poised to become a dynamic new urban hub of the Inner South. Using modern design concepts and sustainable development initiatives, it will become a highly liveable environment where commercial and cultural worlds coexist.
While the project sets a new benchmark as an authentic ‘urban village’ within Sydney, it will also draw comparisons with other outstanding urban centres such as SoHo in New York and Shoreditch in London.
A Diverse Demographic
A neighbourhood of energy and colour
Alongside the young professionals of Green Square Town Centre, you will also find families and older residents who have lived in local homes for generations.
The ethnic mix will be similarly diverse, with first- and second-generation migrants from countries within Asia and Europe also living and working within the area. This diversity will be reflected in the local flavour of the area. The Town Centre’s European-style piazzas and cosmopolitan array of restaurants, cafés, shops, entertainment and culture will add to the community’s vibrancy and create a character that will develop over time.
