Green Square - Town Centre Sydney

1991

The New Southern Railway, linking the CBD and Airport, is announced.

1995

South Sydney City Council releases the strategy for a sustainable South Sydney.

1996

South Sydney Development Corporation established to promote, coordinate and manage development within the South Sydney Growth Centre.

1998

South Sydney City Council completes the Green Square Structural Masterplan, providing a development framework for the Green Square Redevelopment Area.

The Green Square LEP and DCP prepared (as amendments to the South Sydney LEP and DCP).

1999

The Green Square LEP is gazetted and DCP adopted by Council. The Green Square Town Centre area is deferred from the LEP for further planning.

2000

An initial Green Square Town Centre Masterplan is exhibited.

2001

An international design competition is held for the ‘Town Core’ area within the Green Square Town Centre and won by a consortium comprising Turner + Associates, Professor Wiel Arets and Mcgregor + partners.

Landcom is directed by the Minister for Planning to assist the South Sydney Development Corporation in planning for the Town Centre.

2003

The Green Square Town Centre Masterplan is exhibited by South Sydney City Council.

2004

The South Sydney City Council is amalgamated into the City of Sydney.

2005

The City of Sydney assumes leadership role in planning for the Green Square Town Centre.

2006

The City of Sydney adopts new planning controls for the Green Square Town Centre, including an LEP, DCP and Infrastructure Strategy.

The Green Square Town Centre LEP is gazetted.

2007

Design of the infrastructure and public domain areas for the Town Centre commences.

2010

Infrastructure delivery.

2011

Building construction.

2025 – 2030

Town Centre to be fully completed – with around 5,500 residents and 7,000 workers.
