Birth Of Sydney's Global Village
The decision to create a revitalised, vibrant Green Square Town Centre for the Inner South coincided with the 1991 announcement of the railway link between Sydney CBD and the airport.
Green Square Town Centre was to capitalise on the renewed strategic importance this gave the area, which would now be more central than ever to the thriving employment hubs of Sydney Airport, Port Botany and the CBD.
The new Town Centre formed the centrepiece of the plan for a revitalised Green Square area. Throughout the years of 1998, 2001 and 2003 a number of competitions, exhibitions and tenders led to the creation of master plans and design concepts for this major project.
In 2004, the City of Sydney assumed the lead role in planning for the Town Centre, following its amalgamation with South Sydney Council. In April 2006, the Council adopted a package of new planning controls for the Town Centre.
The following combination of controls outlined such things as permissible land use, building height allowances, guiding principles and delivery of key infrastructure.
- The South Sydney Local Environmental Plan 1998 (LEP)
- The South Sydney Development Control Plan 1997 (DCP)
- Green Square Town Centre Infrastructure Strategy
